Ingredients
Scale
Oatmeal Base
- ½ cup old-fashioned oats
- ½ cup milk
- ¼-½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Optional Toppings
- 1 tablespoon butter
- Roasted pecans
- Additional cinnamon (for garnish)
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: Add the oats, milk, ¼ cup water, maple syrup, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt to a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir until all ingredients are well combined.
- Start Cooking: After about 2 minutes, once the liquid begins to bubble, stir thoroughly and reduce the heat to medium-low. Continue cooking and stirring occasionally for 2-3 more minutes, or until the oats have absorbed most of the liquid and have thickened to your preferred consistency.
- Adjust Consistency: If you prefer a thinner oatmeal, add the remaining water one tablespoon at a time. Keep in mind the oats will thicken further as they cool, so err on the side of slightly more runny.
- Serve: Spoon the oatmeal into a bowl and top with butter, roasted pecans, and an extra sprinkle of cinnamon if desired.
Notes
- Use old-fashioned oats for best texture; quick oats will cook faster but result in a softer texture.
- Milk can be substituted with any plant-based milk if desired.
- Adjust sweetness by varying maple syrup and brown sugar amounts to taste.
- Optional toppings add flavor and texture but can be omitted for a simpler dish.
